Under the curriculum development pillar, the NUL WTO Chair held a seminar themed: the Teaching of International Trade at the National University of Lesotho: Content and Pedagogical Approaches. This idea came from the realisation that the university has been running undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, across faculties, that deal with one aspect or another of international trade. However, there has been very little collaboration between faculties when it comes to teaching in these programmes. This is despite the fact that many of the same issues are taught in the programmes, albeit from different disciplinary perspectives. Furthermore, some courses might not have been revised in a long time and may be outdated, in terms of their content, material, and pedagogical approaches.
Therefore, the curriculum development seminar assisted the Chair in the identification of existing undergraduate and postgraduate courses and programmes on international trade. Participants were drawn from the faculties of Agriculture, Humanities, Law, and Social Sciences. They shared their course outlines and also presented on their teaching strategies. This was a learning experience for all involved. The seminar discussed gaps in programme offerings and sought to stimulate and to facilitate collaboration in teaching. A follow up seminar will be organised that includes external actors to provide feedback on programmes and courses.
