
Overview of NUL
The origins of the National University of Lesotho go back to April 8, 1945, when a Catholic University College was founded at Roma by the Roman Catholic Hierarchy of Southern Africa. It became the National University of Lesotho on October 20, 1975, by virtue of the NUL Act No. 1 3 of 1975. The 80-hectare University site is situated at Roma (pop. +/- 11,000) approximately 34 kilometers south-east of Maseru, the capital of Lesotho.

The governing body of the University is the Council. The policy is formulated by the Senate – both the Council and the Senate were established by the Act. The University holds membership in:
- The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU)
- The Association of African Universities (AAU)
- The International Association of Universities (IAU)
- The Association of Eastern and Southern African Universities (AESAU)
- The Southern African Regional Universities Association (SARUA)
The Chancellor of the University is His Majesty King Letsie III of the Kingdom of Lesotho. The Vice Chancellor is Professor Olusola Isaac Fajana. The University comprises seven faculties and one institute.
